Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is performance-based marketing where a partner earns commission for each tracked sale or lead, not for exposure.

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based model where an external partner (the affiliate) promotes your products and earns a commission only when a tracked action occurs — usually a sale, but it can also be a lead or a qualified action. You pay for results, not for exposure. Each affiliate gets a unique link, and the sale is attributed via a cookie or a discount code within a defined attribution window, most often under a last-click model.

Why does affiliate marketing matter?

For an online store, affiliate is a low-risk channel: you know your maximum cost up front, because the commission is a fixed percentage of the order or a flat amount per conversion. That lets you scale sales through influencers, blogs, and niche sites without committing ad budget in advance. It complements paid traffic and helps you reach audiences you would otherwise miss — and you can track profitability per partner using EPC and well-considered attribution.

Common use cases

  • Influencer and content partners who link to products for a percentage of the sale.
  • Discount-code tracking for partners when cookies are blocked by browser tracking protection (ITP) or ad blockers.
  • Loyalty and referral programs where existing customers are rewarded for referring new ones.
  • Cashback and coupon sites that drive bottom-of-funnel sales on a commission basis.

Shopify perspective

Shopify has no full affiliate management in the core platform, but it does offer the first-party Shopify Collabs app for creator partnerships. For proper affiliate programs, most merchants use an app like Refersion, UpPromote, or GoAffPro — see our roundup of the best Shopify affiliate apps. Remember to mark affiliate links with rel="sponsored" (or nofollow) so they do not pass PageRank and stay compliant with Google’s guidelines.
