Content gap
A content gap is a topic, keyword, or customer question competitors cover or rank for that your store is missing or covers worse.

What is a content gap?
A content gap is a topic, keyword, search intent, or customer question that competitors rank for or cover, but that your own store either lacks entirely or covers worse. It can be a macro gap — a page or topic that simply does not exist on your site — or a micro gap, where an existing page fails to fully answer what the user is actually searching for.
Why does a content gap matter?
Content gaps are unmet search demand: traffic and sales you miss because the content is not there. Closing them captures organic traffic you previously left to competitors and builds broader topical authority, because Google sees you covering a subject more completely. In an online store it is usually the informational part of the customer journey (guides, comparisons, FAQs) that is missing — not the product pages themselves.
Common use cases
- Competitor analysis. Run a content gap report in Ahrefs or Semrush to surface keywords competitors rank for that you do not.
- Internal gaps via Search Console. Find pages with many impressions but few clicks — a sign the search intent is not well covered.
- Missing on-page content. Buying guides, size info, FAQs, or comparisons that shoppers expect but do not find.
- Seasonal and new product categories where you do not yet have landing pages or blog content.
Shopify perspective
Product and collection pages mainly target transactional intent, while informational gaps are best filled with blog content under the /blogs/ path. Map your keywords against competitors’, prioritize topics with real search volume and search intent, and avoid spinning up thin pages just to fill a gap — one thorough post beats ten shallow ones.
