Conversion Rate

Conversion rate is the share of sessions or visitors that complete a desired action such as a purchase, calculated as conversions divided by traffic.

What is conversion rate?

Conversion rate is the share of sessions or visitors that complete a defined action. It is calculated as the number of conversions divided by traffic, multiplied by 100 to express it as a percentage. The action does not have to be a purchase: it can just as well be a newsletter signup, an account creation, or an add to cart. That is why people distinguish between macro-conversions (sales) and micro-conversions (smaller steps along the way).

Why does conversion rate matter?

Conversion rate tells you how efficiently your traffic turns into revenue. Doubling the rate has the same effect on sales as doubling traffic — but is usually far cheaper, because you work with visitors you already pay to attract. For most online stores the rate sits around 1-3%, so even small improvements to a product page, cart abandonment, or checkout can move the bottom line noticeably. It should always be read alongside average order value, since a high rate at a low order value is not necessarily profitable.

Common use cases

  • Tracking the overall store conversion rate week over week to spot trends.
  • Comparing the rate across traffic sources, devices, and landing pages.
  • Measuring the impact of a split test on button copy, price, or product imagery.
  • Pinpointing where in the funnel visitors drop off: product page, cart, or checkout.
  • Setting realistic targets from industry benchmarks rather than an arbitrary number.

Shopify perspective

Shopify calculates the “online store conversion rate” from sessions — not unique visitors — and shows a funnel in Analytics broken into three stages: sessions that added to cart, reached checkout, and completed the purchase. Use that breakdown to find the bottleneck instead of staring only at the headline number. Keep in mind that apps, bots, and misconfigured tracking can inflate the session count and drag the rate down artificially.
