CTA
A CTA (call to action) is the button or link that asks the user to take the next step, such as 'Add to cart' or 'Sign up'.

What is CTA?
CTA stands for call to action and is the button, link, or text that asks the user to perform a specific action — typically to buy, sign up, or get in touch. A CTA usually combines clear copy (“Add to cart”), a contrasting color, and a placement that makes the action easy to spot. It is the concrete click that moves a visit toward a conversion.
Why does CTA matter?
The CTA is the very transition from interest to action, and small changes to its copy, color, size, and placement show up directly in click-through and conversion rate. A weak or hidden CTA costs sales even when traffic and product are fine. That is exactly why the button is one of the most obvious elements to split test: you can isolate a single change and see the effect in the numbers.
Common use cases
- “Add to cart” on product pages — the store’s primary CTA, which should be visible without the user scrolling too far.
- Checkout buttons like “Proceed to payment” that carry the customer through each step.
- Newsletter popups and lead forms, where the CTA captures emails (“Get 10% off”).
- Campaign banners and above the fold sections that lead to collections or offers.
- A/B testing copy, color, and placement to find the variant that converts best.
Shopify perspective
In a Shopify theme, the “Add to cart” button is generated by Liquid inside the product’s form section, and you control its copy, color, and size through the theme editor or the product-form snippet. Use action-oriented copy rather than vague words like “Submit”, and make sure the button is large enough and has strong contrast on mobile. Place the primary CTA high on the page — but on expensive or complex products it can pay to let the button follow once the customer has enough information to act.
