Double opt-in
Double opt-in requires a new subscriber to confirm their signup via a link in an email before the address is added to your list.

What is double opt-in?
Double opt-in is a two-step signup process: first the user submits a signup form, then you send a confirmation email with a link they must click before the address is added to your list. Unlike single opt-in, where the subscription is active immediately, double opt-in requires an active confirmation from the recipient.
Why does double opt-in matter?
The confirmation step filters out mistyped, fake, and bot-generated addresses, so your list only holds real, engaged recipients. That protects your sender reputation and open rate and reduces bounces and spam complaints. Under GDPR, double opt-in is not a legal requirement, but it gives the strongest documentation that consent was actually given.
Common use cases
- Newsletter signup via a popup or footer form.
- Discount code in exchange for signup, where you want to avoid throwaway addresses.
- Markets with strict documented-consent requirements (e.g. EU/GDPR).
- Cleaning up a low-engagement list where quality matters more than volume.
- Rebuilding sender reputation after many bounces or spam complaints.
Shopify perspective
Shopify has a built-in double opt-in feature under Settings > Notifications (customer contact), where you can enable a confirmation email for email subscribers. Shopify Email uses this global account setting, while apps like Klaviyo control double opt-in per list. Remember that the price of cleaner data is a slightly smaller list, because some people never click the confirmation link. To handle subscriber data correctly, also put a data processing agreement in place with your email marketing software.
