What is EPR (extended producer responsibility)?

EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) is a regulatory principle that makes producers and importers financially and/or organizationally responsible for what happens to their products and packaging once they are used. In the EU, EPR typically covers packaging, electronics (WEEE), and batteries. Compliance usually means registering with a Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) and paying fees that are often modulated by material and recyclability (eco-modulation).

Why does EPR (extended producer responsibility) matter?

For an online store, EPR is not just environmental policy — it is a condition for selling legally in a market. The rules are transposed into each EU country’s own law, so the obligation applies per country: if you sell into several countries, you typically have to register separately in each one and appoint an authorized representative if you are not established there. Failing to register can mean fines, held shipments, or removal from a marketplace.

Common use cases

• You sell packaged goods to Germany and must register in the LUCID packaging register before your first shipment.
• You sell to France and must provide a UIN number that marketplaces such as Amazon verify before you can sell.
• You import electronics or batteries and must join a national take-back scheme.
• You expand into new EU countries and need to map the EPR requirements per market before launch.

Shopify perspective

Shopify is a software platform, not a marketplace with joint liability, so it does not register you for EPR or file reports on your behalf. You have to join the national schemes yourself, track quantities sold per country, and report on time. Use order and product data from Shopify as the basis for your volume declarations, and keep documentation of registrations and fees so it can be shown during an audit or inspection.
