What is a favicon?

A favicon (favorite icon) is the small square icon that represents your website in browser tabs, bookmarks, browser history, and in Google’s mobile search results. It is usually declared with a <link rel="icon"> tag in the page’s <head>, and as a fallback browsers automatically try to load the file /favicon.ico from the root of the domain. Modern favicons are supplied as .ico, .png, or .svg – and a single .ico file can hold several sizes (16×16, 32×32, and 48×48).

Why does a favicon matter?

For an online store a favicon is a small but visible piece of branding. When a customer has many tabs open, the icon is often the only thing that makes your store easy to find again. Google also shows your favicon next to the result in mobile search, so a crisp, recognizable icon strengthens both click-through rate and trust. When the favicon is missing, the browser just shows a blank default placeholder, which makes the page feel unfinished or less professional.

Common use cases

  • Recognition in browser tabs when the customer has several pages open at once.
  • Display next to your result in Google’s mobile search results (Google recommends a square icon that is a multiple of 48px, e.g. 48×48).
  • Icon when a customer saves the store as a bookmark or to the home screen (via apple-touch-icon, typically 180×180).
  • Consistent brand identity across browser, tabs, and shared links.

Shopify perspective

In Shopify you upload your favicon directly in the theme editor under the theme settings – no code editing required. Shopify scales the image down to 32×32 px, so upload a simple, square graphic that stays clear at small sizes (avoid fine detail and lots of text). Switching theme does not necessarily reset the favicon, but always check the result after a theme change. Think of the favicon alongside your other visual metadata such as Open Graph, so your store looks consistent in tabs, search results, and shared links.
