What is a fulfillment warehouse?

A fulfillment warehouse (Danish lagerhotel) is an external logistics partner that stores your store’s stock and typically picks, packs, and ships orders on your behalf. It is a form of outsourced third-party logistics (3PL): instead of running your own warehouse, you rent space with a partner that operates the building, staff, and the warehouse management system that tracks bin locations and orders. You usually pay for storage plus a fee per order picked and shipped.

Why does a fulfillment warehouse matter?

When a fulfillment warehouse handles your fulfillment, the customer’s delivery time, order status, and returns flow depend directly on how the warehouse operates. Errors in picking, stock counts, or shipping reach the customer immediately. That is why the warehouse’s data must stay synced with what the customer sees in the store — otherwise you sell items that are not on the shelf or promise delivery times you cannot keep.

Common use cases

  • Growth without your own warehouse. You outsource storage and shipping instead of investing in your own space and staff.
  • Seasonal peaks. You scale up before the holidays and back down afterward without fixed cost for space.
  • Multiple sales channels. Orders from your store, marketplaces, and retail are pooled and shipped from one warehouse.
  • International shipping. A warehouse closer to customers means shorter delivery times and cheaper freight.

Shopify perspective

Shopify supports multiple inventory locations, so you can hold stock at both your own location and the fulfillment warehouse and count inventory per location. Most warehouses integrate via an app or Shopify’s Fulfillment Service API, so paid orders route to the warehouse automatically and tracking numbers sync back to the order. Check that the location is set up correctly, that shipping rules match the warehouse’s zones, and that a fulfillment warehouse is not confused with a parcel shop, which is the customer’s pickup point.
