Impressions
Impressions are the number of times an ad or search result is shown, regardless of clicks. The basis for CTR and reach in marketing.

What is impressions?
Impressions are the number of times an ad, post, or search result is shown to users — regardless of whether anyone clicks. A single user can generate several impressions if the same ad is served again. Note that one impression is not the same as one person: that is what Reach counts. Some platforms also distinguish between served and viewable impressions, where the ad actually appeared on screen.
Why does impressions matter?
Impressions are the denominator behind most key marketing metrics. Click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions, so without impressions you cannot judge how well an ad or a search result converts a view into traffic. Low impressions often signal too low a bid or too narrow an audience, while high impressions with low CTR point to weak creative or mismatched intent.
Common use cases
- Assessing ad reach in Meta Ads or Google Ads, often compared with Reach to see frequency.
- Calculating CTR to test ad copy, images, and keywords.
- Tracking organic visibility in Google Search Console, where impressions show how often your pages appear in search results.
- Spotting problems, such as high impressions but few clicks, a sign of a weak title or meta description.
Shopify perspective
Shopify does not report ad impressions directly — they live in the ad platforms (Meta, Google Ads) or in Search Console for organic search. Connect Search Console to your store for product and collection page impressions, and keep UTM parameters consistent so numbers from the external channels can be compared with sessions in Shopify analytics.
