What is inventory management?
Inventory management is the ongoing control of how much stock you hold, when to reorder, and where the stock physically sits. The goal is to sell without running out of in-demand products and without tying up capital in items that don’t move. In practice it connects purchasing, stock locations, and sales data so the quantity shown in your store always matches the real stock on hand.
Why does inventory management matter?
Wrong stock numbers hit the customer directly: selling something you don’t have leads to cancellations, refunds, and bad reviews, while excess stock ties up cash and raises the risk of dead inventory. Good inventory management tracks metrics like reorder point and safety stock so you order in time and in the right quantity. For an online store, accurate availability is also a selling point – customers want to know whether an item is in stock right now.
