Long-Tail Keywords
Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific search phrases with low individual volume but clear intent and typically higher conversion.

What is Long-Tail Keywords?
Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific search phrases — often three words or more — that each have low search volume compared to broad “head” terms. “Shoes” is a head term; “waterproof women’s hiking boots size 39” is a long-tail keyword. Although each phrase is searched rarely, long-tail queries together make up the majority of all searches on Google.
Why does Long-Tail Keywords matter?
For an online store, long-tail keywords are often the most realistic path to organic traffic. Because they are specific, they reveal a clear search intent and usually catch shoppers further down the buying funnel, giving higher conversion rates than vague, broad terms. Competition is also lower, so a smaller store can realistically rank on page 1 for hundreds of niche phrases instead of fighting a losing battle over one expensive head term.
Common use cases
- Product titles and descriptions that use concrete attributes like color, material, size, and use case.
- Collection pages targeting a specific niche, e.g. “organic wool baby clothes”.
- Blog posts and guides answering concrete questions (“how to wash merino wool”).
- FAQ and support pages that capture problem and comparison searches.
- Internal search logs, where customers’ own wording reveals new long-tail opportunities.
Shopify perspective
Shopify has no dedicated keyword field — since Google dropped meta keywords, it is about weaving phrases naturally into the page title, meta description, body copy, alt text, and the URL handle. Optimize product and collection pages for the long-tail variants your customers actually type, and back them with blog content to capture more organic traffic. Avoid repeating the exact same phrase across many pages so you don’t compete against yourself.
