Pareto principle

The Pareto principle is the 80/20 rule: roughly 20% of causes typically account for about 80% of the results.

What is the Pareto principle?

The Pareto principle — often called the 80/20 rule — states that roughly 20% of causes account for about 80% of the effect. It is named after the economist Vilfredo Pareto, who in 1896 observed that around 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population. It is a rule of thumb and an empirical observation, not an exact mathematical law: the split may just as well be 70/30 or 90/10, and the two numbers do not have to sum to 100.

Why does the Pareto principle matter?

In an online store resources are limited, and the Pareto principle helps you aim them at what actually moves revenue. Typically a small handful of products drives most of the sales, and a smaller group of customers drives most of the contribution margin. By finding the “vital few” instead of spreading effort evenly, you get more impact out of the same time and the same ad budget.

Common use cases

  • Assortment. Find the 20% of products (your hero products) that drive most of the revenue, and prioritize stock, imagery, and campaigns on them.
  • Inventory management. ABC analysis groups items by their share of value — a direct application of 80/20 thinking.
  • Customers. Identify the highest lifetime-value customers and target loyalty and retargeting efforts at them.
  • Marketing. See which few channels or campaigns deliver most of your ROAS, and scale them.
  • Optimization. Focus CRO and bug fixes on the pages and checkout steps with the most traffic and conversions.

Shopify perspective

Use Shopify’s built-in reports under Analytics — especially “Sales by product” and “Sales by customer” — to surface your 80/20 patterns. Sort products by revenue rather than units sold, so cheap items don’t hide the real profit drivers. Also look at average order value per segment, so you prioritize the products and customers that contribute most to the bottom line.
