PPC

PPC is an advertising model where you only pay when someone clicks the ad, with the price per click set by an auction.

What is PPC?

PPC (pay-per-click) is an advertising model where you only pay when a user actually clicks your ad — not for showing it. The cost per click (CPC) is set by a real-time auction, and what you pay is often lower than your maximum bid, because placement is decided by Ad Rank, which combines your bid with ad quality and several other factors. The best-known PPC platforms are Google Ads and Microsoft Ads.

Why does PPC matter?

For an online store, PPC is one of the fastest ways to get purchase-ready traffic: you can be visible on relevant searches from day one instead of waiting for organic traffic to build up. Because you pay per click and can measure sales directly, you can control the budget tightly and calculate whether campaigns are profitable via ROAS — or better yet POAS, which also accounts for cost of goods and margins.

Common use cases

  • Google Shopping ads for products, driven by a product feed from Google Merchant Center.
  • Search ads on high-intent keywords like “buy running shoes size 42”.
  • Retargeting visitors who left the cart without buying.
  • Scaling bestsellers where the margin can absorb the cost per click.
  • Testing new products or categories before investing in SEO.

Shopify perspective

Shopify has official sales channels for both Google & YouTube and Facebook & Instagram that automatically sync your products, prices, and stock status to the ad platforms. Keep a clean product feed with correct titles, GTINs, and images, and stay on top of conversion tracking so every click can be tied to real sales. Combine PPC with paid social to reach customers in both search and social feeds.
