What is a product bundle?

A product bundle is several products sold together as one purchasable unit — typically at a combined price that is lower than buying the items separately. A bundle can be fixed (the same items every time, e.g. a starter kit) or a mix-and-match offer where the customer builds their own box. Technically, a bundle can be either a standalone product or a group of existing product variants tied together at checkout.

Why does a product bundle matter?

Bundles are one of the most direct ways to raise average order value, because the customer adds multiple items to the cart in a single action. They also make it easier to move slow-selling stock, explain how a product is used (e.g. camera + bag + memory card), and increase perceived value without necessarily cutting deep into margin. Unlike a plain quantity discount, a bundle groups different items into one offer.

Common use cases

  • Starter kits. Group the essentials new customers need anyway (e.g. razor + blades + gel).
  • Build-your-own-box. Let the customer pick, say, 5 items for a fixed price.
  • Gift sets and seasonal offers. Curated bundles for Christmas, Valentine’s, or Black Friday.
  • Clear inventory. Pair a bestseller with a slow-selling product.
  • Checkout upsell. Offer a bundle price instead of a single item.

Shopify perspective

Shopify offers a free first-party app, Shopify Bundles, that builds fixed bundles from existing products and variants. When a bundle sells, the app automatically decrements the inventory of the underlying components instead of tracking separate bundle stock, so you avoid overselling. The app covers simple fixed bundles and multipacks but does not support subscription products. For advanced scenarios — mix-and-match, “build-a-box,” or tiered pricing — use the Bundles API (product bundle component) or a third-party app.
