Product variant
A product variant is a purchasable version of a product defined by options like size or color, each with its own price, SKU, and inventory.
What is a product variant?
A product variant is a specific, purchasable version of a product defined by a combination of option values — for example Size: Medium and Color: Black. Each variant can have its own price, its own SKU, barcode, weight, inventory quantity, and image. In Shopify, every variant is also assigned a unique numeric variant ID that the rest of the store — cart, checkout, and apps — references.
Why does a product variant matter?
The variant is the unit a customer actually adds to the cart and the unit your inventory is counted on. If variants are set up wrong, it hits customers directly: a sold-out size can still be sold, the price is off, or the wrong image shows. Clean variants with correct SKUs are also the foundation for an accurate product feed to Google Shopping and for precise inventory management across locations.

- Apparel and footwear with size and color combinations, where each combination has its own stock.
- Price differentiation, where a larger pack size costs more than the small one.
- Feeds and advertising, where each variant needs a unique SKU and its own image to match correctly in Google Shopping.
- Inventory per location, where one variant’s stock is split across multiple warehouses.
Shopify perspective
Shopify builds variants from options: a product can have up to 3 options (e.g. size, color, material). The limit was traditionally 100 variants, but via the newer GraphQL Admin API it has been raised to 2,048 variants per product. You can preselect a specific variant with ?variant=<variant_id> in the URL, and Shopify by default sets a canonical from those variant URLs back to the main product. Keep it all organized with a well-structured product catalog.
