Rank tracker

A rank tracker monitors your positions for chosen keywords in search results over time, split by country and device.

What is a rank tracker?

A rank tracker is an SEO tool that follows where your pages rank for a fixed list of keywords in the search results over time. It looks the keywords up automatically on a schedule — typically daily or weekly — and stores the position so you can see the trend on a chart. Unlike Google Search Console, which reports an average position based on the impressions you actually received, a rank tracker actively checks a fixed set of keywords you have chosen yourself.

Why does a rank tracker matter?

Google rankings vary by country, between mobile and desktop, and are affected by personalization. A rank tracker gives you a consistent measurement where country and device are locked, so you can tell whether your product and collection pages are genuinely moving up or down. For an online store it is the earliest signal that your SEO work is paying off — often weeks before the effect shows up in organic traffic and revenue.

Common use cases

  • Following commercial, non-branded keywords your collection and product pages need to win.
  • Monitoring branded keywords to quickly catch sudden drops or competitors bidding in.
  • Measuring the impact after a theme change, a URL change, or a larger migration.
  • Benchmarking your positions against competitors for the same keywords.
  • Catching declines early so you can react before the traffic disappears.

Shopify perspective

Shopify has no built-in rank tracker, so you need a third-party tool such as Ahrefs, Semrush, or AccuRanker — optionally alongside Search Console. Create separate groups for product, collection, and blog pages so you can see which page type drives growth. Remember to set country and language correctly if you sell in several markets, otherwise you are measuring positions your actual customers never see.
