What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the work of making a website more visible in the unpaid, organic search results — as opposed to paid ads. The discipline is usually split into three areas: technical SEO (crawlability, speed, indexing), on-page/content (titles, copy, product descriptions, meta description), and off-page (links and domain authority). The goal is to match a user’s search intent with a page Google finds relevant enough to rank highly.

Why does SEO matter?

For an online store, organic traffic is often the cheapest and most durable channel: you don’t pay per click, and a page that ranks well keeps sending visitors month after month. A product page sitting at position 1 for a purchase-ready keyword can drive more revenue than an equivalent ad — without the ongoing ad spend. SEO is also cumulative: the content, links, and technical health you build today keep paying off.

• Optimizing title and meta description fields on products and collections to lift click-through from the search result.

Shopify perspective

Shopify automatically generates a sitemap at /sitemap.xml and updates it as you add products, collections, pages, and blog posts. Each of these templates has a “Search engine listing” section in the admin where you edit the SEO title and meta description. Note that Shopify enforces fixed URL prefixes like /products/ and /collections/ that you cannot remove. Always test on real URLs and monitor Google Search Console for indexing, clicks, and positions.
