Suggestive search

Suggestive search shows products, categories, and search terms in real time as the customer types – also called autocomplete or predictive search.

Suggestive search shows suggestions – typically search terms, products, and categories – in real time as the customer types in the search field. It is also called autocomplete, predictive search, or type-ahead. Suggestions are fetched asynchronously after the first few characters, so the list updates without a full page reload, and a good implementation handles typos, partial words, and synonyms so the shopper still finds the item.

Why does suggestive search matter?

Visitors who use a store’s search usually have higher purchase intent and convert better than those who only browse. Suggestive search shortens the path from thought to product: the customer sees relevant items after just three or four characters and avoids hitting a “0 results” page because of a typo. That reduces failed searches and supports both search intent and filtering in a single flow.

Common use cases

  • Large catalogs where shoppers cannot scan the menu and prefer to search directly.
  • Mobile, where a short search box with suggestions is faster than tapping through categories.
  • Stores with many variants or long product names, where suggestions reduce typing errors.
  • Surfacing bestsellers or campaign products directly in the suggestion list.
  • Cutting zero-result searches through synonyms and typo tolerance.

Shopify perspective

Shopify has predictive search built in through the Predictive Search API (/search/suggest.json), and themes like Dawn use the Section Rendering API to display server-rendered suggestions with products, collections, pages, and articles. You control behavior, synonyms, and boosts with the free first-party Search & Discovery app. For larger catalogs, advanced typo tolerance, and better relevance, many stores move to a dedicated search app. Always test on real queries – including misspellings – and watch which queries return zero results.
