TOF
TOF (top of funnel) is the awareness stage where you reach cold audiences who do not yet know your store or have purchase intent.

What is TOF?
TOF stands for top of funnel and covers the widest, uppermost part of the marketing funnel: the awareness stage. Here you reach cold audiences who do not yet know your store and are not actively looking for your product. The funnel is usually split into TOF (awareness), MOF (middle of funnel, consideration) and BOF (bottom of funnel, decision and conversion), where TOF is about creating that first exposure.
Why does TOF matter?
Without a full top of funnel, there is no one to retarget further down. TOF creates the new audiences and the data (pixel events, cookies, sign-ups) that later become the warm audiences for retargeting. The big trap is measurement: because the conversion happens later, last-click attribution almost always undervalues TOF, so budget gets wrongly shifted to BOF channels like branded search and email.
Common use cases
- Prospecting on paid channels with broad audiences on Meta, TikTok, and YouTube via paid social.
- Content and SEO that pull organic traffic from informational searches early in the customer journey.
- Measuring against awareness KPIs like reach, impressions, video views, and share of new visitors — not direct ROAS.
- Building remarketing audiences that are later activated in MOF and BOF.
Shopify perspective
TOF traffic rarely converts on the first visit, so do not judge the campaign on pure last-click ROAS in Shopify reports. Tag your TOF links with consistent utm_source and utm_medium parameters so the traffic can be separated in GA4, and back it up with the Meta pixel and ideally server-side tracking. Evaluate results on assisted conversions and new customers over time, not just the last click before checkout.
