Upsell Step
An upsell step is a defined point in the purchase flow where the customer is offered a higher-value variant or upgrade to raise order value.

What is an upsell step?
An upsell step is a distinct point in the purchase flow where the customer is offered a higher-value variant, an upgrade, or a larger package of what they are already buying. Unlike cross-selling, where you suggest a complementary product, upselling moves the customer up to a higher price tier of the same item. An upsell step can sit before the purchase (on the product page or in the cart), on the checkout page itself, or as a post-purchase offer after payment.
Why does an upsell step matter?
The primary goal of an upsell step is to raise average order value without paying for extra traffic. Because the offer is shown to a customer who has already decided to buy, willingness to convert is high. Placement is critical, though: an upsell step that interrupts or confuses the flow can add friction and push the customer to abandon the cart, while a well-timed, relevant offer lifts revenue per order.
Common use cases
- Variant upgrade on the product page. Suggest a larger pack, longer subscription, or premium model before the item is added to the cart.
- In-cart upsell. Offer an upgrade just before the customer proceeds to checkout.
- Post-purchase upsell. Show a one-click offer after payment but before the order confirmation.
- Quantity or bundle upsell. Swap a single item for a product bundle at a better unit price.
Shopify perspective
Post-purchase upsell steps are built with Shopify’s Post-purchase Checkout Extension and appear after payment but before the thank-you page. One-click adds without re-entering payment require a gateway that vaults the card (typically Shopify Payments) — they will not work with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or BNPL like Klarna. Placing upsell content on the checkout page itself requires Shopify Plus with Checkout Extensibility. Always test the upsell step on a real order and watch that it does not lower your completion rate.
