WEEE

WEEE is the EU framework for waste electrical and electronic equipment, making producers and sellers responsible for collection and recycling.

What is WEEE?

WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and is governed in the EU by the WEEE Directive (2012/19/EU). It is a form of extended producer responsibility in which whoever first places electrical and electronic equipment on an EU market is liable for collecting, treating, and recycling those products once they become waste. Everything from chargers and headphones to lamps and small household appliances can be in scope.

Why does WEEE matter?

If you sell electronics in your store, WEEE is not an optional CSR gesture but a legal obligation, with fines and mandatory annual reporting of the volumes you place on the market. You typically have to register in a national WEEE register and fund the recycling, often through a collective compliance scheme. If you sell cross-border directly to consumers in other EU countries, you usually must register in each country and appoint an authorised representative there.

Common use cases

  • You import or manufacture electronics and place them on the market under your own name.
  • You distance-sell electronics to consumers in other EU countries and must register locally.
  • You need to mark products with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol and inform on disposal.
  • You must report volumes and pay fees to a producer-responsibility scheme.

Shopify perspective

Shopify is only the storefront platform and does not handle WEEE registration, labelling, or reporting for you — that responsibility sits with you as the producer or seller. WEEE obligations are also separate from the rules for packaging and batteries, which run their own registers. Map your target markets early and budget for fees and representatives before opening sales to new EU countries.
