An exit-intent popup is a popup triggered when a visitor is about to leave the page, usually to capture a signup or recover a sale.
What is an exit-intent popup?
An exit-intent popup is a popup that triggers the moment a visitor’s behavior suggests they are about to leave the page. On desktop it is usually detected via mouseout/mouseleave, when the cursor moves up and out across the top edge of the browser window toward the address bar or close button. The goal is to give the visitor one last offer — often a discount code or a newsletter signup — before they click away.
Why does an exit-intent popup matter?
Most visitors to an online store leave without buying. An exit-intent popup tries to recover some of that traffic right as it is heading out, without interrupting the customer while they shop. It is mainly used to build email lists and to lower cart abandonment by offering a last-second incentive. Because it only appears on exit, it is less intrusive than a popup that fires immediately.
Common use cases
- Cart-abandonment discount. Show a discount code when a visitor with items in the cart is leaving before checkout.
- Newsletter signup. Capture the email in exchange for free shipping or 10% off the first order.
- Lead magnet. Offer a guide, size chart, or giveaway to collect contacts.
- Mobile adaptation. Since touch devices have no cursor, popups here trigger instead via scroll behavior, back-button, or inactivity.
Shopify perspective
Shopify does not have exit-intent built into the theme by default — you typically add it via a popup app (such as the free Shopify Forms) or through code in the theme. Always measure the effect on conversion rate, not just the number of signups.
