What is a marketplace?

A marketplace is a commerce platform where many different sellers offer their products under one shared brand, search, and usually a single checkout. The customer shops at “Amazon”, “eBay”, or “Zalando” and rarely notices that the order comes from a third-party seller. The platform owns the traffic and the customer relationship and typically takes a commission or referral fee per order — often on top of a subscription or fee to be present at all.

Why does a marketplace matter?

For an online store, a marketplace is a shortcut to huge, purchase-ready traffic you don’t have to generate yourself. The trade-off is lower margin because of the commission and less control over branding and customer data — you rarely own the email or purchase history. Most merchants therefore use marketplaces as an extra channel in an omnichannel strategy rather than replacing their own store, where margin and the customer relationship are strongest.

Common use cases

  • Reach new markets by listing on Amazon, eBay, or Zalando without building traffic from scratch.
  • Test demand for a range before investing in your own campaigns.
  • Sell excess inventory through a high-volume, low-marketing-cost channel.
  • Sync the catalog — title, price, GTIN, and stock are kept up to date via a product feed.

Shopify perspective

Shopify does not run a classic marketplace itself, but the Shop app acts as a consumer-facing sales surface. Your store can list and sync products to external marketplaces through sales-channel apps for Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Walmart, so stock and prices update in one place. Watch each platform’s product-data requirements (e.g. GTIN, categories, and images), and keep SKUs consistent across channels so orders and inventory don’t fall out of sync.
