Omnichannel

Omnichannel connects online store, physical retail, POS, and marketplaces so inventory, customer data, and orders are shared in one seamless experience.

What is Omnichannel?

Omnichannel is a sales strategy where every channel – online store, physical retail, POS, social media, and marketplaces – shares the same data and works as one seamless experience. The difference from multichannel is integration: in omnichannel the channels share inventory status, customer profiles, and order history, whereas multichannel typically runs each channel in its own siloed system.

Why does Omnichannel matter?

Customers switch between devices and channels before they buy, and they expect cart, pricing, and stock to stay in sync the whole way. Unifying your channels prevents overselling, duplicate support tickets, and conflicting prices – and it lets you offer smooth flows like click-and-collect. A seamless experience is consistently associated with higher loyalty and lifetime value, because the friction between channels disappears.

Common use cases

  • Buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS). The customer buys online and collects at the physical store.
  • Ship-from-store. Online orders ship from the nearest store’s stock instead of a central warehouse.
  • Unified inventory across locations. Stock counts update in real time whether the sale happens online or in store.
  • Shared customer profile. Purchases, returns, and loyalty points follow the customer across channels.
  • Consistent pricing and promotions. The same offer applies both in store and on the online shop.

Shopify perspective

Shopify is built for omnichannel: Shopify POS shares the same product catalog and inventory as the online store, and everything is managed from one admin. Use Locations to allocate and sync stock across stores, warehouses, and online – ideally connected to a WMS at higher volume. Add sales channels like Instagram, Google, and marketplaces so orders and inventory flow into the same back office instead of needing manual reconciliation.
