Bounce Rate

Bounce rate is the share of sessions with no further interaction. In GA4 it is simply the inverse of engagement rate.

What is bounce rate?

Bounce rate is the share of visits (sessions) where the user left without doing anything more. In the old Universal Analytics, a bounce was a single-page session with no interaction hit. In GA4 the term has been redefined: bounce rate is now the exact inverse of engagement rate — the percentage of sessions that were not engaged. A GA4 engaged session lasts longer than 10 seconds, fires at least one conversion event, or has two or more page views.

Why does bounce rate matter?

Bounce rate is a quick gauge of whether a landing page matches what the visitor expected. When paid traffic lands on a landing page that is slow, irrelevant, or unclear, you often see it as a high bounce rate and a low conversion rate. But the number needs interpretation: a high bounce rate is not always bad — a visitor who finds opening hours or a phone number on a single page and leaves can still be a successful visit.

Common use cases

  • Judging whether product pages and campaign landing pages hold traffic well enough to move it toward checkout.
  • Comparing bounce rate across channels to expose low-quality traffic (e.g. cheap display clicks).
  • Debugging high-bounce pages for slow load times, misleading ad copy, or missing mobile optimization.
  • Distinguishing “good” bounces (answer found instantly) from “bad” bounces (confusion or errors).

Shopify perspective

In Shopify you typically measure bounce rate through GA4. Be aware that numbers from apps and themes can differ, and that auto-firing events like scroll tracking artificially lower the reported bounce rate because they count as engagement. Look at bounce rate per landing page rather than a store-wide average, and read it alongside engagement rate and conversion before drawing conclusions.
